INTRODUCTION:

POSITION SUMMARY:

The writer is a critical role that works across the organization to write a diverse range of creative content.  In conjunction with the Writer Team Leader, this role will plan, coordinate and optimize the strategic use of stories, photos, and design materials to assist Timor-Leste’s, donors, and supporters to understand the key issues facing communities living in poverty and inspire them to engage with CITL’s work.

Content development includes a range of tasks and skills including researching, writing, editing, and commissioning.

You should have an enquiring mind and a good grasp of grammar and punctuation ensuring words and images look great on the page – commissioning and possessing a visual flair is necessary. You will need confidence, great ‘soft skills, and the ability to work in a high-pressure atmosphere. You also need the ability to link with teachers and use the Ministry of Education Curriculum for guidance.

The writer works across the organization to write a diverse range of creative content.  In conjunction with the Writer Team Leader, this role will plan, coordinate and optimize the strategic use of stories, photos, and design materials to assist Timor-Leste’s, donors, and supporters to understand the key issues facing communities living in poverty. It is anticipated this will inspire them to engage with CITL’s work.

In this position, you will work and collaborate with the Graphic designer team, Illustration team, and Communication team. This position is based in Dili, with possible travel required to conduct field activities such as interviews and field testing.

Attaching previous work samples is an advantage.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

DEVELOP INNOVATIVE AND CREATIVE CONTENT FOR THE LAFAEK MAGAZINE.

  1. Select articles for issues and planning publication contents and produce good quality documentation that meets applicable standards and is appropriate for its intended audience.
  2. Ability to write, edit and proofread engaging content to inform, influence, and engage different audiences including donors, stakeholders, partners, school students, and segments of the Timor-Leste public.
  3. Responsibility to develop the content mapping for all magazines in alignment with relevant sources including links to the CITL LTP as a base for content development.
  4. Responsible for writing texts, stories, or articles for educators aimed at promoting professional development in the areas of positive discipline and class management.
  5. Ability to write a variety of articles and create activities that promote child literacy (fiction stories, children’s games, health, agriculture, micro-finance, and education).
  6. Proactively develop relevant material for sponsorship in Lafaek Magazines, in order to sustain projects. (Liaising with marketing staff, communication officer, designers, and artists for sponsorship proposes).
  7. Ability to use MoE curriculum guidance and align the magazine’s content with the Education curriculum.
  8. Ability to use INL Tetun version in all magazine content.
  9. Undertake background research including desk-based research. Conduct community field visits including interviews with children, communities, and teachers in order to write articles on various topics including health, science, civic education, and children’s activities.
  10. Secure and verify the information and interviewing sources,  proofread and fact-check articles;
  11. Setting deadlines for all content with the approval of the Content Development team leader;
  12. Rewriting, editing, proofreading, and subbing copy to ensure it is ready to go to print.
  13. Ensuring that all feature articles comply with ethical codes of practice and legal guidelines.
  14. Attend and participate in knowledge sharing sessions – present ideas, share opinions, production team meetings, all training sessions, edit and evaluate articles. Generate ideas for future stories and features.
  15. Conduct international surveys of children’s magazines in order to enrich and strengthen the quality of Lafaek Magazines.

INNOVATIVE AND CREATIVE CONTENT FOR THE LAFAEK ONLINE

  1. Proactively collaborate and liaise with marketing staff, communication officers, designers, and artists to review relevant material for online sponsorship, in order to sustain projects.
  2. Coordinate with communication officer regarding photographers’ proposals and articles.
  3. Promote and review content on social media (Facebook, YouTube, Website)
  4. Review all-around consistency (style, fonts, images, tone, etc.) and identify customer needs and gaps in our content, recommend a new topic.
  5. Attend and participate in knowledge-sharing sessions, online production team meetings, and all training sessions.
  6. Rewriting, editing, proofreading, and subbing copy to ensure it is ready for online publication.

DEALING WITH CLIENT

  • Liaise with clients to determine their requirements and make technical recommendations.
  • Managing client proposals from typesetting through to content design, print, and production.
  • Working with clients, briefing and advising them with regard to content design style, format, print production, and timescales.
  • Determining size and arrangement of content development material.
  • Preparing rough drafts of material based on an agreed brief.
  • Reviewing final content and suggesting improvements if required, demonstrating and receiving feedback about ideas.
  • Liaising with a graphic designer, illustration, and communication officers on a regular basis to ensure deadlines are met and material is produced and printed to the highest quality.
  • Keeping clients up-to-date with progress on production progress.
  • Testing products for errors and making amendments.

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES

  • To proactively participate in the APPA process for all direct reports (annual appraisal, midyear review, and regular 1:1 meetings) creating an environment where feedback is valued, acted upon, and monitored, and where the APPA process (including the paperwork) is an integral component of Annual Work Plans and activities.
  • Engage in emergency preparedness, and assist in any emergency response as required.
  • Promote a safe and secure work environment; foster a culture of safety and security awareness and consistently follow all CARE safety and security policies, procedures, and directives.
  • Demonstrate an ongoing commitment to gender equality, diversity, child protection, and CITL LTP.
  • Participate in surveys for the magazines (baseline survey, pre and post-tests, and final evaluation).
  • Cooperate with the Content development team leader or Publication DPM in order to use all relevant magazine items (picture, illustration, design, ideas, or hard copy of the magazines) for interests outside the project.
  • Assist with Lafaek extension activities, including community dialog, competitions, and Lafaek Radio broadcasts as required. (Relevant events, fairs, and conferences).

EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum University Diploma and/ or Vocational Training in Education and Communications or equivalent.
  • Minimum 2-3 years of relevant work experience, preferably in Education and Communications in International Non-Government Organisations (INGOs) and/or local Non-Government Organizations (NGO’s);
  • Ability to support the Production Team function with integrity and implement procedures and processes with minimal supervision.
  • The ability to consistently meet tight deadlines.
  • Exceptional writing skills, including experience writing for a broad range of audiences (especially in education) and proven experience in emotional storytelling.
  • Exceptional interpersonal communication skills including the ability to manage internal and external stakeholders.
  •  A good ‘design eye’, attention to detail, and (preferably) basic Adobe Creative Suite skills.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills including the ability to work with different communities.
  • Demonstrated ability to take direction and to work as part of a team.
  • Proven experience in following standard policies, procedures, and processes.
  • Demonstrated ability to be creative and motivated.
  • Demonstrate good interpersonal skills, sound judgment, planning, team building, and facilitation skills.
  • Good oral and written Tetum and English communication skills.
  • Intermediate (very good) Microsoft Office use, with knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel.
